Japonia mundyanus (Godwin-Austen, 1889)
“The apical whorls are reddish, but this may be partly due to the remains of the animal. The spiral elevated lines are a trifle coarser than the rather distant oblique ones, and it is at the points of intersection that the short epidermal hairs arise.” (E. A. Smith, 1894)
“I regret having overlooked Godwin-Austen’s L. mudyanus when describing L. altus. They are undoubtedly identical. A specimen recently received from the typical form in being of a uniform dark purplish-brown colour.” (E. A. Smith, 1895)
Godwin-Austen (1889) original descriptions on Lagocheilus mudyanus – “Shell dextral, moderately solid, conical, closely umbilicated; sculpture very minute transverse striae, with at distant intervals a fine costulate rib, very conspicuous in the very young shells, becoming obliterated with age; four fine spiral lirae ornament the last whorl, with one below the periphery, very minute short hairs are given off from the points of intersection of the lirate bands and the transverse rib, but these are lost as the shell grows older; colour pale olivaceous, crossed by transverse bands of dark liver brown; spire conic; apex rather sharp; suture impressed; whorls 5, sides convex; aperture circular, milling white within; peristome indistinctly double, the outer lip slightly expanded, with a very small notch at the sutural margin; columellar margin rounded. Operculum flat, thin, horny, transparent, multispiral.”
E. A. Smith (1894) descriptions on syntype Lagocheilus altus – “Testa parva, elato-conica, anguste perforata, subpellucida, pallida, epidermide tenuissima pilosa induta, strigis obliquis rufescentibus ornata; anfractus 5.2, convexi, liris tenuibus pilosis (in anfr. superioribus 2, in ultimo 5) incrementique lineis obliquis tenuibus subdistantibus late cancellati, ultimus rotundatus, haud descendens; apertura circularis; peristoma intus leviter incrassatum, album, extra anguste expansum, rufescens, ad parietem tenuissimum.”
Kobelt (1902) descriptions on Japonia (Lagochilus) mudyana – “Schale eng genabelt, kegelförmig, ziemlich festwandig, mit (besonders bei jungen Schalen) deutlichen Spiralreifen und feinen Linien dazwischen, deutlich gestreift, blass olivenbraun, mit leberbraunen Striemen; Apex ziemlich spitz; Naht eingedrückt; 5 gewölbte Windungen, letzte oben mit 3, unten mit 1 Spiralreifen, die auf jedem Anwachsstreifen ein Haar tragen; Mündung kreisrund, innen weisslich; Mundrand fast doppelt, äusserer leicht ausgebreitet, an der Naht leicht ausgebuchtet; Spindelrand abgerundet. Deckel dünn, flach, vielgewunden.”
Lagocheilus mudyanus – “Size: maj. diam. 3.20; alt. axis 4.0 millim.” (Godwin-Austen, 1889); syntype Lagocheilus altus – “Diam. maj. 4 millim., min. 3 ; alt. 4½. Apertura 2 longa et lata.” (E. A. Smith, 1894); Japonia (Lagochilus) mudyana – “H. 4, Durchm. 3,20 mm.” (Kobelt, 1902)
Type locality – “Busan Hills” leg. A. Everett (Godwin-Austen, 1889); syntype Lagocheilus altus “Busau, N. W. Borneo” (E. A. Smith, 1894)
