Hemiplecta densa (Adam & Reeve, 1848)
“The variety of this species from Palawan, namely that described by Pfeiffer as Helix Schumacheriana has already been quoted by Dohrn (Naclirichtsbl. deutsch. mal. Gesell. 1889, p. 57). Two forms of it were obtained by Mr. Everett, also in Palawan, one in which the last whorl is much more acutely keeled and more finely sculptured beneath than in the other. Considerable variation in these respects occurs also in the Bornean examples in the British Museum. The very acute specimens from Palawan are very like H. cymatium of Benson from Penang. Two specimens of the latter, marked in Pfeiffer’s handwriting from Pulo Zancavi, Malacca, appear to me quite inseparable from the present species, but two others from Penang, presented by Mr. De Burgh, although very like the var. schumacheriana, appear to have an additional whorl and to be less rapidly coiled, so that the last is narrower than in the Bornean shell.” (E. A. Smith, 1893)
“Allied to H. citrina, but of stouter growth, with the surface indentedly decussated.” (Reeve, 1854)
(Martens, 1908)
Reeve (1854) descriptions on Helix densa – “Shell umbilicated, subdiscoid, thick, obtusely keeled, rather depressed at the upper part, obliquely plicately striated, delicately indentedly decussated throughout; fulvous, encircled with a broad chestnut band beneath the keel; whorls five; aperture transversely lunar, white within; lip simple, slightly thickened inwardly.”
Reeve (1854) original descriptions on Helix schumacheriana - “Shell umbilicated, orbicularly depressed, burnt-olive, finely corrugately decussated throughout; spire very short, obtuse; whorls five to six, flatly convex, finely margined at the sutures, last whorl sharply keeled; umbilicus rather narrow, open, deep; aperture lunar-oval, lip simple.”
Dohrn (1859) original descriptions on Nanina herklotsiana – “T. umbilicata, convexo-depressa, tenuiuscula, sub epidermide Cornea fusca vel lutea, fascia una pallida supra lineam medianam nigricantem, altera latissima circa umbilicum alba, superne confertim oblique, raro spiraliter striata; spira depresso-conoidea; sutura impressa, rufomarginata; anfr. 5½ convexiusculi, lente accrescentes, ultimus rotundatus, subangulatus; aperture rhombeo-ovalis; peristomium simplex, rectum, circa umbilicum protractum.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa – “Testa anguste at aperte umbilicata, depresse conoidea, angulata, solida, superne rugis parvis undulatis obliquis confertis coriacea, rufocastanea, zona suturali nigricante, inferne lineis spiralibus confertissimis paulum undulatis sculpta, e rufocastaneo versus umbilicum in colorem virentiflavidiun transiens; spira conica, modice elata, acutiuscula, apice concolor vel pallidior; anfr. 6, planati, ultimus carina obtusa plus minusve distincta munitus, fascia subcarinali fusca saepe obsoleta, subtus modice convexus, antice haud descendens; apertura diagonalis, pro ratioue generis parva, subrhombea; peristoma rectum, obtusum, margine basali parumper antrorsmn flexuoso, columellari breviter descendente, ad insertionem vix reflexiusculo.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa atrofusca – “major, acute carinata, superne obscure rufocastanea.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa ignobilis – “minor, obtuse carinata, virescens.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa herklotsiana – “mediocris, carina prorsus evanescente, grosse sculpta, rufescens.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa moussoniana – “mediocris, subinflata, carina parum distincta, bifasciata.”
Martens (1867) descriptions on Nanina densa lowiana – “mediocris, anfractibus concaviusculis, pallida.”
Tryon (1886) descriptions on Nanina (Rhysota) densa – “Narrowly umbilicated, moderately solid, striate, minutely granulose above, smoother below; light yellowish or orange brown; whorls 5½, last whorl acutely angulated on the periphery, with a narrow chestnut band below the angle.”
Tryon (1886) descriptions on Nanina (Rhysota) schumacheriana – “Chestnut-colored, slightly larger with more compressed carina than the last species (N. densa), chestnut-banded below the carina.”
“This is N. densa, var. β of Pfeiffer, but subsequently separated by him as above. Dr. on Martens unites it with densa as a variety, adding as different varieties N. atrofusca, Albers (=typical schumacheriana), var. ignobilis (=typical densa), N. herklotsiana, Dohrn, p. 37; N. moussoniana (=N. corrosa, Mousson), var. lowiana.” (Tryon, 1886)
Tryon (1886) descriptions on Nanina (Rhysota) herklotsiana- “Umbilicated, rather thin, closely obliquely and distantly spirally striate above; reddish brown or yellowish brown, fading to whitish on the base, the periphery with a narrow yellowish band, bordered below with dark chestnut, the latter sometimes appearing at the suture; whorls 5J, the last subangulate on the periphery.”
E. A. Smith (1895) descriptions on Hemiplecta densa everetti - “In the Annal,; 1893, vol. xi. Pp.349, 350, I mentioned the occurrence at Palawan of a very acutely keeled variety of this species. It most nearly resembles that form which is recognized as var. schumacheriana. It is, however, a triffle larger and flatter above, the peripherial keel in consequence appearing somewhat more acute. Additional specimens brought by Mr. Everett appear to make it advisable to designate it with a varietal name. I would therefore suggest that it be known as var. everetti.” (E. A. Smith, 1895)
Martens (1903) descriptions on Hemiplecta densa annectens – “Testa anguste et aperte umbilicata, subdiscoideo-conoidea, angulata, solida, superne rugis parvis undulatis obliquis confertis sculpta, sat obscure fusca, zona suturali angusta nigricante et fascia peripherica angulari fusca picta, infra leviter striatula, fusco-flavescens; spira paulum elevata, apice paulum pallidiore; anfr. 6-6¼, superne planiusculi, ultimus infra convexus, ad aperturam vix descendens; apertura modice obliqua, pro ratione generis parva, rhombeo-lunata, peristomate recto obtuso, margine externe obsolete angulato, margine basali levissime antrorsum convexo, dein sinuatim in marginem columellarem brevissimum triangulatim dilatatum, at non reflexum transeunte.”
“Animal : - The extremity of the foot is rather square, the mucous gland large, not extending to the sole of the foot, and with apparently no overhanging lobe. The right dorsal lobe is of usual size, but the left is very poorly developed, being very narrow and separated into two parts, the posterior portion being narrow and only 6 millim. long; in the space between them lies a small left shell-lobe, flat and tongue-shaped; a right shell-lobe is also present, which would appear in life to be broad and triangular in outline. The odontophore is like that of H. humphreysiana from Singapur, the type of the geniis Hemiplecta. Jaw circular, no central projection. The shells had been taken evidently in the cold season, and the generative organs were not fully developed in the specimens I dissected, but enough was seen to show the presence of a long simple amatorial organ, and the male organ also as in Hemiplecta.” (Godwin-Austen, 1891)
