Diplommatina baritensis E. A. Smith, 1894
“The spire of this species above the penultimate whorl is much narrowed and obtuse at the tip; the penultimate is considerably bulged out and has a slightly distorted appearance when viewed both in front and behind. It differs from D. aldrichi Godwin-Austen, in form and in the character of the lip of the aperture.” (E. A. Smith, 1894)
“None of the specimens from these localities agree exactly with the type from Barit Mountain. In form they correspond very closely, but none are so distinctly and distantly lamellated. Those from Kina Balu, Busau, and Rumbang are of a dirty yellowish tint, becoming reddish towards the apex of the spire, and the peristome are bright yellow. The specimens from Banguey Island appear almost smooth at first sight, the fine costulation being observable only under a powerful lens. They are pale and whitish. Some of the yellow lips are rather more thickened than in the typical form. In the figure the spire above the penultimate whorl is not long enough and too broad. Some specimens bear considerable resemblance to D. concinna, H. Adams, but the penultimate whorl is larger in proportion to the last.” (E. A. Smith, 1895)
“This species includes two forms, one with densely placed ribs on the top whorls, and a second one with widely spaced ribs. The latter form often (not always) has the outer peristome only slightly expanding beyond the inner. D. onyx has lower, more densely placed ribs. In D. baritensis the ribs on the widest whorl always have eroded, irregular crests. In D. onyx the ribs never have eroded crests.” (Vermeulen, 1993)
E. A. Smith (1894) original descriptions on Diplommatina baritense – “Testa dextrorsa, imperforata, subpellucida, albida, ad apicem rufescens; anfractus 7, tenuissime lamellati, perconvexi, sutura profunda discreti, primi quinque lente accrescentes, penultimus maximus, subito inflatus, ultimo latior; apertura subcirculavis, latere columellari rectiusculo, dente minuto submediano instructo; peristoma duplex, margine externo tenui utrinque angulatim producto.”
Kobelt (1902) descriptions on Diplommatina (Diplommatina) baritensis – “Schale rechtsgewunden, ungenabelt, halbdurchsichtig, mit sehr feinen lamellenartigen Rippchen, weisslich, oben rötlich; Naht tief; 7 sehr gewölbte Windungen, die 5 oberen langsam zunehmend, vorletzte am grössten, plötzlich aufgeblasen, breiter als die letzte; Mündung fast kreisrund; Mundrand doppelt, äusserer dünn, an beiden Seiten eckig vorgezogen; Spindelrand fast gerade, in der Mitte mit einem winzigen Zahn.”
Vermeulen (1993) descriptions on Diplommatina baritensis – “Shell dextral, fusiform, penultimate whorls widest; sides slightly concave. Whorls 6½-7¼, convex. Suture impressed. Constriction level with the parietal side, or with the angular edge of the peristome or slightly beyond this point, with 1 parietalis, 1 longitudinal palatalis at the level of the peristome, 1 transversal palatalis, 1 columellaris. Tuba 7/8-1 1/8 whorl. Radial ribs straight, distinct, high, thin, widely spaced to densely placed near the top, widely spaced on the other whorls (2-4 ribs/0.5 mm on the penultimate whorl). Spiral striation absent or inconspicuous, on the top whorls only. Umbilicus closed. Aperture hardly tilted with regard to the coiling axis; columellaris distinct, not or slightly directed downwards. Peristome double, expanding; palatal side sinuous, with a protrusion; basal side without edge; basal edge sinuous, protruding; outer peristome slightly hardly to distinctly expanding beyond the inner; inner peristome with a palatal lip, expanding over the shell on the columellar side, somewhat expanding on the parietal side.”
Diplommatina baritense – “Longit. 2.75 mm, diam. 1.5. Apertura cum peristoma 1.5 lata.” (E. A. Smith, 1894); Diplommatina baritensis – “Height 2.4-3.0 mm; width 1.2-1.5 mm; index 2.0-2.3. Height and width aperture 0.5-0.7 mm.” (Vermeulen, 1993)
Type locality – “Barit Mountain, N. W. Borneo” (E. A. Smith, 1894)
Other localities – “Kina Balu, Busau, Rumbang, and Banguey Island” (E. A. Smith, 1895); Borneo. Sarawak. 4th Div.: G. Mulu, lower Tutoh Valley.” Leg. Wilford (Vermeulen, 1993)
