Alycaeus globosus Adams, 1870
”Although the differences between the extreme forms of this species are considerable, still there is such a general resemblance throughout the series, that it seems advisable to consider the various forms as local races of one and the same species rather than to describe them as distinct. The variation in the tongue-like reflection of the peristome over the umbilicus is one of degree, passing from the typical form, where it is obvious, to the var. pygmaea, where it is almost imperceptible.” (E. A. Smith, 1895)
H. Adams (1870) original descriptions on Alycaeus globosus – “A. testa perforate, ovato-globosa, tenui, costulis tenuissimis numerosis longitudinaliter ornate, pallide fulva; spira turbinate, apice obtusiusculo, sutura valde impressa; anfr. 4½, convexis, ultimo tumido, antice paulum ascendente, 2 mill. Pone aperturam constricto, tubulum suturalem brevissimum gerente; aperture subobliqua, circulari; perist. Duplicato; interno continuo, breviter porrecto; externo patente, ad anfr. contiguum interrupto, supra perforationem angulatim producto et valde reflexo, perforationem fere occultante.”
Godwin-Austen (1889) descriptions on Alycaeus globosus – “Shell dextral, globosely pyramidal, narrowly umbilicated; sculpture very fine regular costulation, quite smooth from sutural tube to the aperture; colour on apex pale orange, the rest very pale white with a slight green tinge; spire conical, somewhat depressed; apex blunt; suture well impressed; the sutural tube short and club-like; whorls 4, sides very convex, the last but very slightly constricted; aperture circular; peristome double, the outer lip much expanded on the columellar margin, covering the umbilicus.”
E. A. Smith (1895) original descriptions on Alycaeus globosus muluana – “Like the typical form, but having the peristome less produced into a tongue-like projection over the umbilicus.”
E. A. Smith (1895) original descriptions on Alycaeus globosus rabongensis – “A triffle larger and more globose than type, pale straw-colour or reddish; peristome as in var. muluana.”
E. A. Smith (1895) original descriptions on Alycaeus globosus kinabaluana – “Not quite so globose as type; spire taller, aperture smaller; peristome with even less production over the umbilicus than in the two preceding varieties; colour same as var. rabongensis.”
E. A. Smith (1895) original descriptions on Alycaeus globosus pygmaea – “Like var. muluana in miniature, but more coarsely and distantly lamellated, and with the peristome even less bent back over umbilicus.”
Kobelt (1902) descriptions on Alycaeus (Alycaeus) globosus – “Schale eng genabelt, kugelig eiförmig, dünn, mit sehr feinen, dichten Radialrippen; Gewinde kreiselförmig, Apex ziemlich stumpf; Naht sehr eingedrückt; 4½ gewölbte Windungen, letzte aufgetrieben, vorn wenig ansteigend, 2 mm hinter der Mündung eingeschnürt, mit sehr kurzer Nahtröhre; Mündung ziemlich schräg, kreisrund: Mundrand doppelt: innerer zusammenhängend, kurz vorgezogen, äusserer abstehend, an der vorletzten Windung unterbrochen, über dem Nabel im Winkel vorgezogen, sehr zurückgeschlagen, den Nabel fast bedeckend.”
Alycaeus globosus – “Diam. maj. 5, min. 3½, alt. 4 mill.” (H. Adams, 1870); Alycaeus globosus – “Size: maj. diam. 3 mm; alt. axis 2.9 mm.” (Godwin-Austen, 1889); Alycaeus globosus rabongensis – “Diam. maj. 5 2/3 millim., alt. 5½.” (E. A. Smith, 1895); Alycaeus globosus pygmaea – “Diam. maj. 3½ millim., alt. 3½.” (E. A. Smith, 1895); Alycaeus (Alycaeus) globosus – “H. 4, Durchm. 5:3.5 mm.” (Kobelt, 1902)
